Take your pick.I derive my values primarily from my upbringing and generally from the rule of treat others as you wish to be treated. My parents taught me not to steal, cheat at school, etc. Also, those are areas where I don't want that to happen to me. I don't steal from your house because I don't want anyone to steal from mine. societyIt's the same place everyone else's morals come from. My society. Based on my upbringing and personal experiences, my surroundings may have been slightly different from yours. The fact is, we are born with virtually no knowledge, so everything we know has been learned. This includes our ideas from right and wrong.
Why are we a "moral" species? Take a look at any social community in the animal kingdom, specifically mammals and primates. Altruism increases the chances of a species to survive, even if it hinders the individual's chances. This is an evolutionary advantage.
