Will I be able to do this with vBulletin?

  • I have a few questions about vBulletin's capabilities. I have done some searching of the site, but it was not exhaustive so if I missed something, I apologize. I haven't yet considered other software options. I realize some of these things are special needs so I figured if any forum software would be able to do it, it would be vBulletin. Your help is appreciated.

    1. I would like to be able to restrict registration to people who have received an invite. The invite should only be able to be used one time. Like a special pin number or something. Even better if it can be associated to their email address they use for the registration.

    2. I am considering having a forum within a content filled website. The website will be password protected for members. I would like to make it so the user only has to log in once (the main site) and not have to log in again to use the forum. Is there a way to have the vBulletin use the same cookie as the main site login?

    3. Does vBulletin have the capability to make it so certain categories are always anonymous for all or certain levels of membership? and/or is there a feature so a user can have more than one name/handle they can post under?

  • 2. You can fx use www.vbadvanced.com (http://www.vbadvanced.com) og www.vbdrupal.org (http://www.vbdrupal.org). Both systems have settings so that only registered members have access to content.

  • All three items will require modifications to vBulletin.

    1. There is a modification available for this I believe.

    2. In most cases it is easier to use the vBulletin login system and modify your other system to use this. Some unofficial bridges between vBulletin and other softwares are available.

    3. I recall something about making anonymous posting in one or more forums being discussed as a modification a good while ago. If it isn't available then it can be requested.

Our modifications community can be found at http://www.vbulletin.org If you ask there in their pre-sales forum then they will be able to advise as to exactly what modifications are available.
