System Tray Icon not showing anymore

  • For some reason the icon in the system tray is not showing anymore, despite the fact that the program is running in processes. (WinXP Home).
I then try to access via the startup list and just will not show up at all..obviously because it is running in the background.
Now this is annoying as I cannot access any components of the program to change or check.
    Any help gratefully recieved...believe me!!!

By the way..I have reinstalled..same effect.

Hello coolchris Welcome to the Forum:)

By not seeing the Icon in the Systray or being able to access OutPost suggests a corrupted download and install or a possible virus.

I have some questions for you.

What version of OutPost are you running?

Did you previously have OutPost working and have you ran a FireWall kill process on your Computer recently to check OutPost?

Have you ran an up to date Antivirus or AntiTrojan scan to check your computer for any viruses or Trojans? If not please update and check your computer. You can also go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and run their free on line virus scan.

Have you previously had another FireWall installed on your Computer?

    Regards

    Randy

  • Yes thanks to all who replied. I will give the links a go and let you know in due course if I solved it or not.
    Cheers

  • Hi Goonman and thanks for the welcome.

Firstly I am using the uptodate version 2 pro.

I had Outpost up and working fine until a few days ago.

I have just ran a virus check, both with AVG and your suggested link and nothing was found. I also ran Spysweeper and Spybot and picked up a dialler called "Stardialler" which was propogated on the HD 10 times!!..I have obviously got rid of all instances, plus the other low level security cookies so now I am Clean.
I then reinstalled Outpost and ran Services.msc, but it tries to start and then after a few minuites stops, I try to start it but then get an error message:

Error 1067...saying it cannot start on the Local computer.

Now after cleaning and reinstalling, I cannot fathom what has happened apart from that there must be a registry entry that is still there stopping the program initialising.

Any other ideas at all, because I am stumped!!

  • Hello coolchris,

coolchris if you had the Stardialler on your computer then you may have a Trojan that is stopping OP from running.

You may have to run a AntiTrojan Program. But first! (There are several good ones. If you look in our Security Section here you will see a link to Trojan Hunter antiTrojan program there is also some links at Wilders.)

Go to the Wilder's Security Forum Web site link in my signature>then scroll down to the adware, spyware & hijack cleaning section of the forum> read the first post in that forum ( Posting Policy: Please read before posting your log!) and go download and run the HiJackThis file save it too your desk top and open and run the program and save the log. But do not fix anything in it. Post that log in the same forum for one of the experts there to help you with it. Be Patient because of time Zone differences after posting the log. You may have to download WinZip if you do not already have it!!!!

After checking, cleaning and fixing everything that they tell you too then see if you can now get OutPost to open.

I know this is alot of work but with what you have already found and cleaned I suspect there may be some thing more. Or some remnants that may be preventing OP from opening.

Post back and let us know what the results are. If you still have the problem of OP not opening then we can go from there.

    I hope this helps

    Regards

    Randy

  • You really need to scan your computer for parasites Chris.

    First read up about it:

    The Parasite Fight!
    http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm

    Start with the junk:
    http://www.aumha.org/a/noads.php

Run Ad-Aware (free version) to check for spyware:
