Disable Logging in free version of outpost

  • Hi folks,

i installed the free outpost version and i have my CPU running on 100%.

I read about in the Forum and have seen posts suggesting to disable the logging by renaming the op_data.dll

My Prob is, that i have no such File in my Outpost Dir, nor have i an op_data.mdb

Is this only possible in the Pro Version ?

Can I disable the Loggin in the Free Version ?

    Thanx for helping.

    Greets

  • Welcome to the forums aRis,

Outpost Free is based on Outpost v1 which does not do logging in the same way, so none of the logging posts you mention apply. In fact, Outpost v1's logging involves far less CPU load than v2 and it should certainly not be using 100%, so I would ask you to supply the following info: What version of Windows are you using? What utility is giving the 100% CPU figure for Outpost? What other software do you have running? Most likely the cause is a conflict with another program so I would suggest you try shutting down everything else to see if the problem persists.

  • aRis,

The browser preset is not appropriate for eMule - try a forum search to find threads with an appropriate eMule ruleset. eMule does impose a heavy CPU overhead due to the hunreds (if not thousands) of network connections it maintains - I would suggest that you amend its configuration to reduce maximum queue sizes.

Outpost provides extensive (I would say unrivalled) application control - if you are new to it then the best place to start would be the Web-Hiker's Guide to Outpost Firewall (www.outpostfirewall.com/guide/) - this covers Outpost version 1 although version 2 is similar in most respects. The Pro version (version 2.1 released a couple of days ago) offers many improvements over Outpost Free including: Ability to load and save multiple configurations; Component control which monitors invdividual DLLs of permitted applications to prevent certain leaktest exploits; A completely new logging system allowing you to create filters for specific events (2.1 allows control over logfile size); A new Active Content plugin (2.1) giving control over external content, Flash and animated GIFs.Downsides are possible increased CPU usage (although 2.1 should address this) and hyperthreading compatibility (for some systems).

  • Hi Paranoid,

thanx for your post. My os is xp...

I forgot to mention, that I have this problem while eMule is running..

I wanted to disable the logging, because I have seen this suggestion in other posts concerning p2p...

Fact is, that the cpu traffic gets to high (outpost and eMule share my cpu by half :)), and after some hours, the dl rate drops dramaticlaly..

I have an idea of what my fault could have been..

Outpost proposed the browser rule, when I first startet eMule, and I accepted that setting. Can I assign specific tcp and udp's ports for eMule (or other apps) ?

Is there a possibility to restrict use of a port, so that any unintentional traffic would be blocked ?

I was testing also an other pf (iss Black Ice). That brings me to my next question.

Is there any application control in the pro version of outpost ?

What do you think about application control ?

Thank you for your valuable support and Greets
