Traditionally, hard wood floors would be hand scraped by workers on site in order to make the floor even. This was before today's modern sanding techniques, of course. Today, machines are used not to even the hard wood floor so much as to add dents, texture, and most importantly, uniqueness.
To hand distress or machine distress; that is the question.
No matter how you look at it, hand scraped or distressed hard wood floors are always going to look more authentic than manufactured 'distressed' wood flooring. But whether you pay the additional $5 per square foot for hand scraped hard wood flooring or save money and do all the distressing yourself, is up to you.
There are now manufactured distressed hard wood flooring that you can buy, pre-distressed and ready to install. Some distressed hard wood flooring manufacturers simply scoop, dent or rough up the floor pieces, whereas others sanding the pieces unevenly in order to create that worn look.
