Why is Congress prohibited from establishing an official religion?

  • Because the Constitution guarantees Freedom of Religion. If an "official" religion was established it would infringe on that freedom. One of the reasons Freedom of Religion was put into the Constitution was because England had an official religion and you could be sent to prison if you practiced any religion except the official one.
    Hope this helps

  • Because we have something called the constitution.

  • The First Amendment of the Constitution prohibits Congress for establishing an official religion because the Founding Fathers understood that a state religion would inhibit the ability of people to govern themselves and participate in a democracy. Despite what many say, the Fathers were all very skeptical of religion and knew the problems that state religion had caused England and the rest of Europe; multiple changes in political power and state religion had caused havoc, distress, rioting, and murder in Europe. They feared the same would happen to America, and explicitly decided that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion...or prohibiting the free exercise thereof."

  • It's called Separation of Church and State! We had a government established religion in England- that's why many people left to begin with!

  • Because of the first amendment. It is enshrined in the Constitution, as the founders did not want a Church of England type religion in the US.

The concept of "separation of church and state" as we know it today came later. The first idea was NOT to have a state religion.
