My psychiatrist wants me to start taking lexapro, can someone tell me more about it please?

  • I don't know anything about it, and I haven't started taking it yet. She wants me to take a 10mg and im fifteen years old.
Can someone tell me pros and cons of this drug either from experience, or some other form of knowledge?
Thank you so much; I really appreciate it
I don't want make my body freak out by taking a drug I can't handle.
(+ i've never been on medication before)

  • Brand Names: Lexapro
Real Name: Escitalopram[ Pronunciation: EE si TAL o pram ]

Escitalopram is an antidepressant in a group of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Escitalopram affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause depression or anxiety.

Escitalopram is used to treat anxiety and major depressive disorder.

Escitalopram may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

For the pro and con of the medication and more info., you can goto the source for more info.

  • You sound worried. 10 milligrams is a very small dose and probably won't have much of an effect on you. Besides, it takes a few weeks for your body to administer the medication and change your brain chemistry. I personally don't know a lot about Lexapro but I can give you a website that explains the side effects and changes the drug can provide.

  • When my niece was your age and going through some hard times, the doctor tried her on a number of different meds. My question to you is why does your doctor want to put you on an antidepression medication?
My niece stayed on some and stopped others, they thought she had AD-HD, then Bipolar and the list goes on...
Lexapro is an antidepression medication, used for anxiety, sadness, moodiness.
I've been on it for a few years and just recently switched to Zoloft, which is cheaper and seems to work well for anxiety for me.
In the end my niece decided that she didn't want to be on any medications and with the doctors help got off of them. I can tell she's not on her meds, she's very silly and very moody and a big risk taker, she's great and I love being around her, she always makes me laugh!

  • I take Wellbutrin SR (150 mg) in the morning, and Lexapro (10 mg) in the evening, for depression and anxiety. I've been taking that for over a year and a half, and it's working very well for me.

The Wellbutrin SR seems to help me to be more alert and active - and wanting to do things - while the Lexapro makes me more mellow, and it helps me sleep better, too.

You might have your doctor prescribe 5mg Lexapro for the first couple weeks - that will give your system a little time to become more acclimated to it.

Also, be sure to take it in the evening. When they first prescribed the Lexapro to me, they had me take it in the morning - and I felt drowsy all day. I switched it to the evening, and that made a huge improvement!

Best of Luck to You :-)
    Paul.

I'm on different medicines. Medicine done right really does help. I like what I'm on, because it works for me. I once was on a different med, and I got into more fights than I did durring high school, lol. I got off that as soon as I could. I hear it works for other people. I've never tried the one they want to put you on. I hope you have good luck with it^_^

  • This medicine has really helped me with anxiety. Not with depression though. No medicine helps my depression and I also had electroshock therapy and that didn't help either. The only side effect I got from lexapro is sweating when I sleep. A girl I know has the same problem. Some people say that for the first couple weeks lexapro made them sleepy, but I didn't have that problem. It has been a pretty benign drug for me.

  • Lexapro is a anti anxiety/depression Seritonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SRI). There are certain dosages you can take, but 10mg (at least from what I know) isn't too bad. It can have a lot of side effects, as with any drug. I took it for about a year and my side effects were mostly during the first two weeks because my body had to adjust to it. I started on 10mg and moved up to 20mg, and now I'm off of it completely. Some side effects I experienced were: slight anxiety, dry mouth, nausea, low libido, and tiredness. However, it definitely helped with the depression i was experiencing, but I also was watched by my counselor, who I saw on a weekly basis. Because you're under 18, it can affect you differently. As with any anti-depressants, it can make you actually more depressed/more suicidal. Your psychiatrist can definitely tell you more about it. Also, there's a lexapro website. Just go to google and type it in. I hope everything works out well for you. :)
