Web Pages and Search Engines

  • How can I make my web page and its attachments available to be found by search engines?

  • Good Day jwhvacr-ga, The best way to get into major search engines is to submit your website at http://www.dmoz.org . Google itself takes a lot of information from dmoz. Chances are that if you have content that can be spidered you will get picked up by Google and then other large search engines. If a website that is listed on a search engine has a link to your website, your site will get picked up sooner or later through the spidering process (the spidering process is a website robot following links in it's index, in search of new content). I am including a link to a basic tutorial on submitting to dmoz.org, and a few other basics about website promotion. Website: Website Promotion 100 URL: http://www.bytechcanada.net/resources/website-promotion.shtml Some search engines allow for quick addition to their index for a fee, but generally this is not worth the money. After you read the Website Promotion 100 article, if you still wish to promote to search engines directly, per free or paid listing, visit: Website: Search Links URL: http://searchenginewatch.com/links/ The "Search Links" page will give you a listing of many popular resources used by people to search the Internet. You can start visiting those resources and looking for a "Suggest a Site" / "Add your URL" or similar link. Please keep in mind that search engines generally do not like Frames, multimedia content like Flash, session IDs, and a few other less common technologies. Using those technologies for a full website might make it impossible for a spider to read your website content and add your website to the search index. These are the basics for getting listed on search engines. I hope they serve you well and have answered your question. If not, please do not hesitate to ask for a clarification. Thank you for using Google Answers. Regards, slawek-ga

  • I can find my site on a seasrch, but not items in the attachments. They are written in HTML and are on the site, but can't be found in a search. Is there some sort of special format to use, or naming convention to get a web search to look into the documents? It see this frequently on other sites while doing a search.

  • Most content gets indexed with time, again, as long as it is search engine friendly. Often, not all the links will get spidered at once and it might take a few visits from the robot. Unless of course the links are not search engine friendly (flash, IDs in URLs, frames, image maps, etc). Any chance of maybe posting the URL so I can take a look and maybe get a better idea as to what is happening? Right now I can only tell you the many possible scenarions. If I see the site, layout, and technologies used, I might be able to give you a better idea as to what is most likely happening. :) Regards, slawek-ga

  • Yes, the URL is www.2001translation.com

  • Hi jwhvacr-ga, From looking at your website, the only thing I can see that might be an issue with search engines are the names of your files: most of the Internet is run on Linux and Unix, both of which are case sensitive. A file name of TEST.HTM is not the same as test.htm. It is recommended that all files are in lower case. Also, the space character is a special character, and should be avoided when naming files. I think if you convert your file names to all lower case, and remove the spaces or replace them with dashes, you will get listed in Google and other search engines much quicker. :) Thank you for the tip, and I hope that you are on your way to a full listing on Google! Please do not hesitate to ask for a clarification at any time. Regards, slawek-ga
