XBMC deinterlace methods?

  • what deinterlace method does xbmc use? i have seen that with mplayer you get better picture what now with xbmc.

  • you can manually force it for specific files by using a conf file for the file in question (should be name filename.ext.conf) there you can set any mplayer options. to get this to work thou, make sure no deinterlace is set in xbmc and that postprocession options are off.

  • normally none, if you use syncing.. still you will loose some quality due to abit worse scaling, should be quite marginal thou.

  • only by changing source.. but you can still start most movies in mplayer too by selecting play using.. atleast you can check the difference

  • i have this problem too - is it possible the quality of de-interlacing can be improved when outputting to 720p? i'm sure it looks fine at 480, but at 720p (sanyo z4 projector /w hd pack) there is clearly 'aliasing' when playing ntsc dvds.

it looks exactly like the pictures in this thread (http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.pl?act=st;f=3;t=16071;st=0).

with de-interlacing set to none the interlacing artifacts are clearly visible, so de-interlacing is needed - if it could just be 'antialiased' it would be beautiful.

using the 4/10/2006 build. can this be improved or can we get access to the 'other' de-interlacing methods mplayer provides?

  • i mean when i put deinterlace on what parameters xbmc will pass to mplayer. there's many ways to do deinterlacing with mplayer. and what xbmc uses seems not to be best one. here in finland dvb broadcast are mostly interlaced and when i am watching them with projector (720p) i have to do deinterlacing.

  • interesting, but how does this work when playing a dvd disc?

i'm not too familiar with mplayer's deinterlacing methods, but it would be nice if the preferred method could be set from the settings | video screen. it seems that whatever method xbmc is hard coded to have mplayer use doesn't work well with higher resolutions.

should i post this to the feature requests forum? i know we're in feature freeze but this is a bit of a bug as far as my setup goes. i think this would make xbmc better for those of us with progressive hd setups. and thanks for all the hard work on this killer app... it just keeps getting better!

  • if you compare mplayer and dvdplayer, they use different i just noticed.

mplayer uses cubicipoldeint, and dvdplayer uses ffmpegdeint

  • okay, so it sounds like the problem lies with dvdplayer and not mplayer then...

i only need deinterlacing when streaming a dvd .iso image via smb or reading from the dvd-rom drive. i assume in both cases this would be using dvdplayer rather than mplayer.

is it possible to get dvdplayer to use a different deinterlace method, like something similar to the .conf file trick for mplayer? then i could experiment and report back on which method looks best.

thanks for looking into this elupus.
