Questions to ask your Grandmother?

  • I'm planning on making a family video about my grandmother kind of in the style of a documentary, but I'm stumped when it comes to asking her what questions. Right now, I'm getting together a list of questions, but they seem to me too obvious like "Where did you grow up?" and "what was it like" and so on. I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas of some creative questions you would ask your grandmother to find out more fascinating things about her life.

  • Who was running for President when you first were able to vote, and what did you think of the election?

Describe your first experience driving a car, and tell me what type of car it was.

What was your first job and did you like it?

What was your greatest accomplishment in life and what was your greatest disappointment?

If you could go back in time and try a new profession, what would it be and why?

  • Grandma,
    * Could you tell me about your parents? (Name's / locations of birth) When they got married?
    * Could you tell me how you met granddad, and about his parents?
    etc.
Keep the questions simple, and take lots of notes.

  • Why don't you ask her questions like, what were the cost of things in her time, (i.e. food, cars, houses,)

  • Questions I ask my Grandma:

How many languages can you speak (you'd be surprised)?
How many countries have you been to?
What was the Great Depression like?
    What were her Grandparents like?
History into her parents and grandparents
    etc....

  • Start with the basics, like you said.
Then here's some questions to ask:

Where were you married and who was there. How did you meet granddad
Where did you go to school. Were you in any clubs or sports
How did you learn to drive, what type of car.
What type of Christmas presents did you get (probably a new pair of shoes or something handmade)
What do you remember about your mom, dad, grandparents, brothers, sisters
What chores did you do as a child
What was it like during the last depression
    What was your first job

  • 1.How she met your grandfather.
2.If she has any stories she would like to pass on
3Things she could only tell about being the parent of your parent.
    4. Thing about her parents.
    5. Things about her Grandparents.
    6. How things have changed
    7. Cloths styles makeup perfume panty hose
8.If there are anything old that's being passed down try and find out the history of the items. (My mother had depression plates and etc. I asked where did they come from I found out she bought them when she was 6 when she went to the movies for 3 cents each.)
9.There is lots more ....Just enjoy and keep tact you may end up being the only one to ask...

  • you could ask some questions like
where were you when you first saw grandpa? and what were your thoughts?
what kind of strange or unusual twist have happened to you though out life?
how many frogs did it take before gramps? depends on if she has humor.
did you ever think something should have turn out differently?
ever hear of any scandels in the family?
did you ever run into any one famous, and not know it at the time?
if you did know it what was it like?
do you remember any stories your parents used to tell, or actually had happen to them?
what would you like to see the family become in the future?

  • What kind of toys did she have, how much did she have to help with the family chores, How much was clothes then, how many pairs of shoes did she have. Did she walk to school and how far. How did boys approach girls then. When was she allowed to go on her 1st date. What does she miss the most. How did she meet grandpa.

  • -Ask her what her daily routine was when he was a child.
-Ask what kinds of food that her mother cooked the best.
-Ask her what her town was like growing up.
-Her first time driving a car
    -Places she's been
-Her most memorable trip she's taken
-The first time she moved away from her parents and how she felt.
-Ask her about her favorite music and favorite style of dance.
