What are the requirements of a writing portfolio?

  • I'm applying to arts boarding schools, and I'm required to make a portfolio for my desired major: creative writing.
I've never done this before, but I want to make a lasting good impression. What are the requirements for a writing portfolio (do I have to do a cover? a title page? what would it say? a table of contents?)? And what should I think about when choosing my pieces?

  • A portfolio is a record of what you have written, so having something to put into it is step one.
You will need a cover, title page and all other things you mentioned, but the essential thing is to have something to put into it.
Have you had anything published? Where? What is the purpose of the publication? Who reads it? Why do they read it? Can anyone obtain a copy of it? Did you win an award or any honors for it?
Review all your work with this in mind.
