Over 80% of livestock disposal sites dangerous in Altai Territory

NOVOSIBIRSK, September 7 (RIA Novosti) - Local prosecutors said Friday they had found more than 700 potentially dangerous sources of infection during checks of the disposal of livestock carcasses in the Altai Territory, southwestern Siberia.
Around 84% of all livestock graves in the region failed to operate according to veterinary and sanitary norms, with landfill sites full of contaminated remains. Considering recent cases of bird flu and anthrax in the region these sites pose a real threat of spreading dangerous diseases to other regions and countries, prosecutors said.
A total of 729 cattle landfill sites are currently operating without having a sanitary protection zone in place, and access to them is not restricted.
The prosecutors also found contaminated carcasses on nearby land and in waste dumps.
A number of administrative cases have been launched as the result of the checks.
