My mini schnauzer is crate trained but doesn't seem to get the fact that when she is out in the house she still has to go outside to use the bathroom. I don't want to keep her locked up in the crate but I don't want her crapping all over the house. She won''t even whine when shes out running around the house. Any suggestions??ABSOLUTELY NOT. Your dog needs to be trained all the time. It has to learn new tricks. And not to be afraid of other thingsWhen you're home, take the dog out every hour to potty. Clean up with an enzyme cleaner to eliminate odors that the dog can smell. Use the crate if she refuses to potty for two consecutive trips outside, and let her out again in 30 minutes or so to try again. Eventually, she'll potty outside, and then she can roam free again for a little bit.
Remember that dogs often need several wees to completely empty their bladder, and also more than one poo. Make sure she gets plenty of opportunity to go good potty outside, and you'll start seeing progress. It's a long road, potty training, just be consistent. I'm have some trouble myself, but the problem is me not being as consistent as I should be, and not giving her enough opportunity to go good potty, ESPECIALLY after she's drank. I don't have any poo problems, only wee, and I can see that I'm not being thorough enough and consistent enough!Every time she goes outside, praise her right after she does it. This is what you should've been doing right when you got her - that's the quickest way for dogs to learn.
In the meantime, try to take the dog out every time after she eats... and then right before bed. Keep up with the praise, for both poop & pee.
If you're gone, leaving the dog in the crate is the best way to keep her from going all over the house. How old is she? It takes a while to housetrain some dogs. For a while you may need to keep her tethered to you on leash when she is out of the crate, and put her in the crate when you can't watch her. It doesn't need to be forever, just til she is reliably going outside. Crate training is good but you also have to let her out from time to time and just watch her. Let her roam around, and if she does anything, scold her, tell her no, rub her nose in it if you want, and put her outside. IT IS NOT CRUEL. Dogs live in the moment. it doesn't hurt them, nor will they remember it 5 seconds later. Thats why you have to catch them the second they do it so they will get the idea. It takes a lot of work, but trust me, it works. Also, give her a treat every time she does her business outside. Here's a suggestion...I had a friend to this with her dog and it worked wonders! First, your going to have to take her out constantly for a while...so just get ready! Even if she doesn't seem to need to go outside, take her out every few hours. Repetition is key here!
Hang a bell on the door and before you take her out...take her paw and ring the bell. Once she does her business outside...praise her like you've been doing. It's going to take a while before she gets the hang of it. But, once you hear that bell...you know she's ready to go outside.#If you have any other info about this subject , Please add it free.# |
