Odd behavior of text version

  • I have had problems with how text versions display after an email has been sent out. I tried all the different suggestion in the forum with the different iso types. The one that worked the best was utf-8, but it still had problems. There were a couple of instances where weird question mark symbols showed up.

It also seems that it would but breaks in every 6 lines, regards if there was a break or not. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

  • Hi CT -

Question marks are usually the sign of non-plain text (ASCII) characters (such as Microsoft Smart Characters). I'd be sure that the values you're pasting into the text version of your email are actually plain ASCII text, rather than just being characters supported by your personal computer.

Similarly, line breaks are handled differently by different operating systems (Windows, Mac, etc) - so if your text has hidden line breaks in it - that could account for the odd breaking behavior you mentioned (if the text is drafted on one platform, and then moved to the other)

Try copying / pasting your copy into (and back out of) a true plain-text editor, such as Notepad (windows) or CleanText (Mac OSX), and see if that fixes the problem for you. Optionally, you might also consider buying a copy of TextSoap (http://www.unmarked.com/textsoap/), which is a program specifically for dealing with this type of problem. Better yet, TextSoap offers a trial version - take it for a spin, and see if that fixes the problem for you before buying a copy :)

Note that anything other than a true plain-text editor (eg Microsoft Word, Dreamweaver, etc) will have support for these non-ASCII characters, and so will be of limited help to you for this problem.

The most common characters that cause problems are angled single and double quotes, as well as ellipses (the three dots [...] that follow some sentence segments).

    FWIW,
    twykr.
